When it comes to successfully training your dog, there is simply no replacement for the work.
The truth is, your dog won’t change or learn without putting in consistent repetitions every single day. When you begin training your dog, it will be tough, you will get discouraged, and you will question yourself daily. These things, and more, make consistency the hardest pillar to master. It’s not fun to do something we aren’t good at doing.
Despite these things, and more, you must be vigilant and determined to turn training into a daily habit. Remember, your dog can not train itself.
For results, you MUST take the initiative.
It is essential to understand that every single interaction you have with your dog is reinforcing a habit, pattern, or behavior. Thus, it is a good idea to have a clear idea of what you want to teach your dog and to have any other people in your household on the same page.
Tips to help with consistency:
Write out your goals. Be specific about your goals and create ways to measure success. For example, if your goal is to have your dog hold a climb command longer, how long is “longer”? Is it twenty minutes? An hour? Be specific so that success is defined.
Take it slow. What I mean by this is that you should not overburden yourself by trying to do too many things at once or changing your lifestyle dramatically. Even though you may be excited to get to work, putting too much on your plate will significantly decrease the likelihood of you being consistent. Only set a new goal once you have accomplished the one prior.
Give yourself a deadline. A goal without a deadline is just a dream.
Get support! Many of my virtual-training sessions are with owners that have a good idea of what they need to do; however, they need reassurance and guidance that they are on the right path. Get a friend or family member to help support you. Follow supportive people who inspire you on social media. Reach out and ask questions.
